Swing Concert

Saturday 15th November 2008

Roger Nobes playing his vibraphone accompanied by piano, bass and drums gave an evening of classical jazz standards as played by Lionel Hampton and Benny Goodman in the 1940s. As Roger explained, the vibraphone is similar to the xylophone and marimba, although it uses duralumin bars instead of wooden bars. The vibraphone has a sustain pedal similar to that on a piano, probably giving a more pronounced effect, and in particular allows the typical sound of a vibraphone with very rich chords produced as a succession of notes are played. This was amply demonstrated with many of the numbers like Moonglow, How High the Moon and Flyin' Home.
