International Rallying

by David Brayshaw

Saturday 19th March 2011

David Brayshaw gave a fascinating talk, illustrated with slides, of his experiences, including the highlights and lowlights, on long distance rallies around the world. David has taken part in many classic car rallies as navigator e.g. London to Lisbon, Rome-Liege-Rome, LeJog, Rallye des Alpes, the Ypres Retro etc. but also long distance journeys and rallies eg: 1996 in a solo car from London to Beijing, 2002 the Inca trail and 2004 London to Sydney both organised by the Historic Endurance Rally Organisation.

David's own car is a 1960 Austin Healey Mark 1, re-imported from California in 1996 and restored then suitably strengthened for long distance rallies in 2006/07. In 2007 the car completed the 12,500 mile Panama to Alaska Rally and more recently Rallye Med of 12,500 miles over two months around the countries close to the Mediterranean. There is some footage of the cars in Egypt, including David speaking, on the ITN website.
