Madingley American Cemetery

by Arthur Brookes

7:30pm, Friday 12th October 2012

Arthur Brookes gave a thoroughly detailed and interesting talk about Madingley American Cemetery, with excellent pictures. While there is a very small cemetery in Northern Ireland and a First World War Cemetery at Brookwood in Surrey, Madingley Cemetery is the only Second World War American cemetery in the UK and is one of 24 American oversea cemeteries. It was established in 1943 and formally dedicated in July 1956. It has been developed over the years and the visitor facilities are about to be further improved. At the end of the war, a large proportion of the families of those who died chose to have their relatives' remains repatriated in an enormous military undertaking. For those remains that were not repatriated, great lengths are taken to support visiting families and friends or those requesting information; in all an excellent tribute to those who died in service.
