The building of the Millennium Tower of St. Edmundsbury Cathedral

talk by Horry Parsons

Saturday 22nd February 2014

Horry Parsons, who was the team leader for the project, gave an excellent talk illustrated with artefacts and slides. The level of craftsmanship both in building the structure and Fan Vaulted Ceiling was amazing and many of those involved were sad to see the project finish and return to less satisfying projects.

Horry recounted many amusing anecdotes – one was about the bidding process, which was open to European companies, but boiled down to 4 relatively local companies. Each of these was interviewed by a panel of experts and Horry believed his employers Sindalls were awarded the contract as he was the only interviewee to keep up a Suffolk accent for the whole of the interview, having been born and bred in Suffolk.

He was also amused by the advice to apply for Planning Permission for "a one storey extension on a single storey building".
