On his third visit to The Friends, Richard Thomas gave a detailed talk about the Gunpowder plot to kill King James I when he opened Parliament in 1605. Guy Fawkes always springs to mind, but the conspiracy was much wider, with at least thirteen others involved. While Robert Catesby was the leader of this failed plot, Guy Fawkes had the misfortune of being caught at the scene. Following his arrest, the others fled north and further west but were eventually arrested, interrogated and met the gruesome death for those found guilty of high treason at the time.
Richard Thomas previously gave talks on the Panama Canal (2010) and the Manchester Ship Canal (2013).
