The Future of the Past. Why protect heritage?

An illustrated talk by Peter Draper

Saturday 28th February 2015

Peter Draper's talk was attended by a large number of people and, with ten years on the committee for the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England and now a commissioner for English Heritage, the talk was delivered with enthusiasm and considerable knowledge. Heritage has been described as "some parts of the historic environment which are important to society as a whole or to a group within it and merit some level of protection or consideration. They are the elements of the historic environment that we value for more than their money's worth". A building does not have to be very old to be listed; an example of this is the 1960s Preston Bus Station which was Grade II listed in 2013. Holy Trinity Church is one of just over 9000 Grade I listed buildings in the UK and the only Grade I listed structure in Meldreth.
