Cambridge Past and Present

An illustrated talk by Dr Brian Cox, Praelector at Wolfson College

Friday 27th October 2017

The Meeting Room was full to hear Dr Brian Cox's talk which gave an interesting insight into the university over the years and was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

In almost 50 years of the university has changed significantly increasing from 10,000 to 20,000 with the number of men reducing slightly, notably the number of women has grown five fold, while Post Gradates have risen form virtually nothing to 7,000 over this period. Another aspect of change in recent years is the cost of housing which has driven Lecturing staff further and further out and in turn has had an effect on college life.

Brian showed some interesting pictures (above) of the c1450 University Chest with its 5 padlocks and Keyholders (left) and of Cuthbert Holthouse, the recipient of the final Wooden Spoon, awarded it in 1909 having achieved the lowest marks in the Mathematics Tripos Exams, although he did pass (right).

Brian has kindly prepared a summary of his talk.
